Trip to the Schomburg Center
Yesterday, I went on a tour with the Desk Set of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and it was a really great experience. A research library within NYPL located in Harlem, the center is the leading source in this area. The two curators that we met with were extremely knowledgeable and more importantly, passionate about the center and it’s mission. Created out of Arthur Schomburg’s desire to disprove the widely accepted belief that black people had no history, the center has been collecting, preserving, and providing access to materials relating to black culture. Currently on exhibit is What’s Up @ the Schomburg, which is an excellent overview of all that the library has to offer with a particular emphasis on what has been collected over the past 25 years. They offer class tours and also have a digital collection that can be accessed online. I would highly recommend visiting them and taking advantage of all of the material they have to offer.
